What Is The Best Used Car Buying Advice?

I get asked "what is the best used car buying advice" quite a lot.

My personal opinion is that you - and only you - are truly qualified to make the decision what is the best car for you.

That's why for years I have avoided putting together my list for used car buying advice - the do's and don'ts - of buying your next vehicle.

Finally, I've had so many requests that I've decided to put together a few simple questions to help you determine, what your best car, truck or SUV should be.

Real Life Story...

Here are the questions that I asked Nancy, to determine what her Cool Car Wish List looked like.

She was looking for a new vehicle - but didn't know what she wanted or what she could afford.

What's the main use of your car?	Driving back and forth to work and I like going to the mountains on weekends with my bike.
Did you buy or lease your last vehicle?	I always buy my vehicles because I put to many miles on my car every year.
How many miles a year do you drive?	Around 25,000 a year.
Would you like a four wheel drive SUV?	I would like one if I can afford it - I really like the Jeep Liberty!
What colors do you like or not like?	I'm open to any color but green.
What options would you like?	Cloth interior, automatic, power windows, power locks and a sunroof... heated seats would be nice, but not a necessity.
How much would you like to spend a month?	As little as possible!...she laughed! Right now I'm spending $300 a month - I'd like to stay around that amount.
Do you have any money to put down?	Yes, I could put down as much as $2,000 if needed, but I would rather only do $1,500 if we could.
How long do you normally keep your vehicles?	Between 3 and 4 years.
Do you have any negative equity in your old car?	I don't know - I almost have it paid off but I'm not sure what it is worth. That's okay I'll find out what's the most money we can get for it in today's market.
How's your credit?	I'm not sure... because of my divorce last year. Don't worry about it. I'll take a short credit application to see what your score is. I have some excellent sources for loans that I can work with.

Based on these short questions and our conversation we figured out that Nancy could afford a Jeep Liberty that was three years old.

After researching her trade-in we learned she was not upside down - she actually had some equity in it.

I found Nancy her "cool" dream Jeep Liberty the following week. It passed our safety inspection with flying colors. And, it had the options she wanted except heated seats - we had those installed after we bought her Jeep. Her payment came to $267.50 per month with only $1,200 down, plus a great interest rate.

That's The Extent of My Used Car Buying Advice...

My advice is based only on your needs and wants and what works for you.
